The Role of a Chef/Cook
Chefs and Cooks are usually required to cook three meals
a day for families and in many cases may also have to cook
the staff lunch. A Chef or Cook in a private household will
be responsible for the cooking, shopping, menu planning (in
consultation with the employer) and kitchen accounting.
Chefs and Cooks will normally work on their own although
many employers will bring in extra assistance for large functions
if necessary.

A Chef will be expected to cater for the most formal
of functions to a very high standard but should also
be prepared to cook for small children and prepare informal family
meals. Sometimes an employer may wish for simple food, like Welsh rarebit,
or simple childrens' meals. The Chef should not
feel that this is beneath them to prepare.

A Cook will be required to be flexable to their employers needs. Prepare meals to a good family
standard and to cater for informal dinner parties. Both
Cooks and Chefs will be responsible for cleaning the kitchen
and utensils.
In some households Chefs and Cooks may be required to carry
out other tasks which could include walking the dog, occasional
driving, lighting fires or any other duties which should
be specified at the interview.
Salaries
Salaries for Chefs may range from £500 per week net
for a qualified Chef to £1000 per week net for a qualified
Chef with a lot of experience, particularly in 5-star establishments.
Salaries are dependent upon age, experience, the duties required and
whether or not accommodation is part of the package.
Salaries for Cooks may range from £300 - £500
per week net again depending upon age, experience, the duties required
and whether or not accommodation is part of the package.
